Alcohol Awareness

Presented by: Deepa Lele

Alcohol is highly prevalent on college campuses. This workshop will cover this subject in a game format. We will cover areas such as BAC, health effects, myths of alcohol and tips on responsible drinking. The purpose of the workshop is to promote responsible drinking on a college campus. The audience can use this information for themselves and/or their friends/classmates. Everyone is welcome to attend.


Alpha Phi Omega, Rush 2000

Look who is coming to college. Is your Chapter representative of your campus population? Alpha Pi Omega, Rush 2000 is designed as a train the trainer program. In this program Chapters will gain tools that they can use to evaluate their own Chapter in regards to membership composition. The program takes a look at the different populations found on a college campus today and asks the Chapter about the methods they are using to attract these students to the program that Alpha Phi Omega can offer.


Alumni Involvement: What Is There For Alumni To Do?

This workshop is geared to inform alumni and graduating seniors of the opportunities available for them after graduation. Alumni are important for the continuing success of Alpha Phi Omega. Come and share your alumni experiences with brothers from different parts of the country.


Begging for Money 101

Presented by: Maggie Katz

An introduction to fund raising for chapters. Material includes some ideas for activities as well as tips for successful fund raising. Hand-outs will offer specific suggestions for planning, implementing and publicizing events. The discussion will focus on broader matters such as taking advantage of resources available on college campuses.


Bringing Usability Design to Your Website

Presented by: Jim Rodden

What makes a website compelling, interesting, or useful? While the first three rules of any publishing effort are content, content, content, this workshop suggests that the next three rules are presentation, organization, and navigation. We will explore website development from a publishing perspective, as a task that requires much more than HTML and scripting skills; it requires careful consideration of purpose, target audience, and overall information structure. Examples will be drawn from traditional print media and software design to demonstrate the basic principles of human interface and usability design so that all our websites can become more useful -- and more used. Although targeted primarily at those currently involved in web development, anyone interested in electronic publishing is encouraged to attend. This seminar will not cover Internet basics and assumes experience and comfort with Internet terminology and concepts (HTML experience not required).


Brotherhood 401: Advanced Concepts in Brotherhood

This workshop is designed to provide ideas and materials to ANYBODY, be they Petitioner, Pledge, or Active, for enhancing the Brotherhood within their group or chapter. Topics covered include chapter workshops and training programs, the Brotherhood process, promoting Brotherhood through leadership and service - we even do a rededication ceremony! You will leave with concrete ideas for building the Brotherhood in your group or chapter - not vague concepts or inklings of programs - but the real thing!

Developing Leadership Programs Within Your Chapter

A discussion of the creation of leadership development programs within chapters. We will be generating ideas, sharing insights, and trying activities (every participant is expected to bring one fun-learning activity relevant to leadership development-handouts are welcome!). The goal of the workshop is for every participant to develop a plan for their chapter. Because of this, it is targeted to chapter officers and section staff members. Disaster Preparedness

This workshop will help participants recognize potential disasters and their effects and help them to prepare themselves, their families, homes and communities for these potential disasters. Disaster Preparedness includes assessing possible natural disasters for which you and your communities are vulnerable, preparing a disaster plan and teaches possible steps you can take to mitigate or lessen the damage if a disaster does occur.

First Aid for the squeamish or First, take your own pulse. No first aid or CPR experience necessary. You will not acquire certification in first aid or CPR, either. You will learn the important do's and don'ts to use when confronted by an unexpected accident (as opposed to a planned one). HIV/AIDS Awareness & Safer Sex: Everything You Need to Know!

Do you know how to protect yourself, your friends and family from HIV, virus that causes AIDS? Do you know how to help someone who has been directly affected by HIV or AIDS? Do you know the facts about how the virus is (and is not) transmitted? Do you know enough to help educate others about thisepidemic? Did you know that most people who are currently infected show no symptoms? Did you realize that HIV is spreading rapidly among teenagers and young adults? Do you know what your chapter members can do to help stop the spread of HIV & AIDS? If you can't answer `YES' to all of these questions or if you have other questions, then come to this workshop. Since there is no cure for AIDS yet, education is the biggest weapon that we have against the spread of this disease.

Making the Most of A National Convention

Massage Workshop: Everybody Kneads Someone

In this workshop, we will learn several massage techniques, focusing on the upper back, along with meditation and hands-on practice. It will be a great opportunity to meet others. Learn how to make friends fast. A much needed technique for helping those tired brothers after an eventful day.


May I Have This Dance? (Waltz or Swing)

Do you want to dance like Fred Astaire or Ginger Rogers? This class will teach you your first steps towards that goal. Come have fun and learn how to Waltz and Swing.


Membership Education

This interactive workshop will explore various issues surrounding membership Education. Participants can expect to be involved in activities and discussion that focus on all aspects of membership education - purposes, activities, and how your education fits into your overall chapter program.


Membership Retention

An opportunity to explore and share the various ways that chapters keep their actives active. The use of leadership and project management tools will be sued as necessary as well as some data analysis. This session is not intended to answer specific questions but rather will assist members in thinking about what they have to work with and doing less with more. The old "ready, aim, fire..." will be looked at as we target the fraternity into the next century (hopefully avoiding our own millennium problem.)

Networking and Communication

Networking is rarely taught in higher education classes, and most people assume that "communication" is something they do every day. But when we can't get what we need, or when opportunities are passing us by because we can't tap into them, it's time to rethink our Networking and Communication strategies. In this seminar, we will look at information resources, identify what "networking" is and find out how to use the technique, and begin to determine the points at which our communication techniques keep us from being as effective as we'd like to be.


Newsletter Production

In this workshop we will work with all aspects of newsletter production, from content to layout, the various computer programs that can be used, and what a newsletter can be used for. During the workshop, questions will be answered during a discussion. If we have time, we will actually design one on paper.


Parliamentary Procedures (Voting Delegate Orientation)

Absolutely essential for first-time voting delegates! This workshop will provide a crash course covering the ins and outs of Robert's Rules of Order necessary to get you through the Legislative Assembly. Everything from the basics of speaking on the convention floor to answering your specific questions concerning procedures for accomplishing other tasks will be addressed. You will have an opportunity to meet other voting delegates and learn to represent your chapter effectively.


Personal Safety and Self-Defense

This workshop is designed to introduce the art of Taekwondo to Alpha Phi Omega members. The workshop will include an introduction to the history of the martial arts, specifically (TKD). It will also include an introduction to punching and kicking techniques. Finally, it will include an introduction to self-defense techniques.

Robert's Rules, Chapter Meetings and You

An excellent hands-on workshop for anyone who wants to get a basic understanding of how to use Robert's Rules of Order in a meeting. Participants will learn the general concepts of parliamentary procedure, learn how to run a meeting efficiently, and actually participate in a mock chapter meeting. This workshop is geared toward all brothers, but is especially helpful for persons leading meetings.


Sectional Staff Roundtable: Developing a Functional Staff

Roundtable discussion on recruiting, motivating, and retaining staff. Do you have questions about what staff is supposed to do? or what to do when staff are not doing their job? Feel free to bring in your experiences and ideas to this informal forum.


Service Chutes & Ladders

The game with the ups and downs of service projects. Come play the sometimes trying game of service!! Learn about the resources (most of them free and already there) to help you plan those successful projects every chapter needs for a solid program. Then, roll the dice and see what happens when you draw the "bad weather card" (maybe nothing if you planned well--or maybe you'll try to come up with a solution), land on a "personality conflict" that affects the project, or a new advisor who unexpectedly helps your chapter. All are welcome/encouraged to attend--you won't regret it!!
