Minutes of UCSC Alumni Association, LA Chapter, 09/17/00

Check out a copy of these minutes at our web pages at:

Present: Claude Zachary, Jennifer Brow, Lisa Buchman, Fran Zandonella (by phone)

Lisa, Jennifer, and Claude met at Lisa's home. Due to the
lateness of the notice of the meeting, the three of us conferred
with Fran via telephone.

We will be sure to announce future meeting times and
places in a much more timely fashion.

Meeting called to order at ~4:00 PM.

Finance Report:

The treasury currently has about $1100, and Jennifer is waiting for our annual infusion of cash from Santa Cruz. We suggested following up on our stalled donation to the Alumni Association by cutting down on the amount and donating around $200 or so on behalf of Dave Graves and Jeremy Strick, but this is still pending.

Annual Business Meeting

We discussed possible sites for our Annual Business Meeting. Ken has done some groundwork with the Long Beach Museum of Art, which sounds like a lovely spot to meet and received some nice coverage in the LA Times. As the only possible drawback, we were a little concerned about the distance of Long Beach from LA and the Valleys and if interested members would balk at driving that far on a Sunday morning. Claude had checked with the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, but they don't have a meeting space. Pasadena is an attractive and fairly central meeting place, however, and the Huntington Library and Museum was suggested as a possible alternate site. Claude does have some connections there, and he will contact them about the possibility of reserving a room.

Claude will have the ABM mailer printed up (he'll be sure to include the Chapter's web URL on it), and a mailing party will take place at Jennifer's house on Monday evening, Sept. 25th, at 7:30 pm -- we need some help in getting out about 1300 pieces! From Jennifer: And volunteers for the October meeting mailing party can call me at home (310) 827-0571 to confirm if they can come!

Upcoming Events

Fran suggested that we have a calendar set up for the coming year's events to present to the people that attend the meeting, and solicit help in organizing each event from them. We discussed having another pizza party in January, a UCSC faculty speaker in February, our winetasting in May, and another weekend outing in July. The trip to Bora Bora was shelved for now, and Jennifer will contact her friend Ann Close who works at the Wrigley Institute on Catalina Island about hosting a group next summer. Fran also brought up the UC cabin facility at Lake Tahoe, or Santa Barbara as possibilities. Another event at the Hollywood Bowl next summer also sounded attractive. Roz Helfand is also planning a meeting for the more politically active in mid-November. We will also check with Rik Converse of the Media Slugs and Dency Nelson about any relevent LA theater events that might be coming up in the next year. Perhaps the one woman play by UC Santa Cruz Grad Brenda Wong Aoki (1976) might return to town. From Jennifer: Just to add to the minutes, we discussed adding the tentative calendar for the year to the flyer for the October meetings, not in terms of firm dates, but months of events. Also we discussed possible connections with Shakespeare Santa Cruz and them coming down to perform as an event, or scheduling a trip up the Santa Cruz for the LA chapter to visit SC and this event. The months we had looked at were as follows: February - Having a professor come down to talk. Where, when, subject to be discussed. May - Annual wine tasting. July - annual camping/visit cool place trip, maybe Catalina, Tahoe research center, or trip to UCSC for Shakespeare Santa Cruz. August - Hollywood bowl October - Annual Meeting with various dinner/happy hour get togethers, or more informal events in between.

Getting more "new blood" involved in the Chapter board was discussed. We need to field candidates for Chapter officers for the meeting next month. Jennifer is willing to continue as Treasurer and is willing to assist the President in keeping things running. Claude is ready to step back abit, but is willing to carry on if there are no volunteers to step in as President. Fran will keep working with the website, but is looking to graduate from the Secretaryship. So volunteers for officers are being sought; anyone interested should contact Claude, and he might be contacting you!
