In attendance: Ken & Moira Feingold, Chris Ridder, Susan Bok, Steve Klein, Claude Zachary Meeting began at 1:45. Susan reported on arrangements for the upcoming wine tasting event. Beau Rivage has been deemed as too inaccessible; Susan spoke with Bruno's Ristorante at 3838 Centinela Ave. and Venice Blvd. They are freeway close, have a nice outdoor patio space that can accomodate 40-50 people with an adjacent overflow room, and can serve a meal for $26-47, or a selection of 5-6 appetizers for about $25, per person. We agreed that appetizers seems more conducive to mingling and mixing and tasting wines. Dori is working on contacting alum winemakers who would bring a generous sampling of their wares down to LA gratis. The idea of using the event to encourage people to become members of the Alumni Association by offering a membership discount was bandied about; perhaps charging $25 for members and $35 for non-members. As far as timing is concerned, the weekend of May 16th and 17th seems to be the target dates. We'll need a 40 person minimum, but that shouldn't be a problem. The program will concentrate on the winemakers and their presentations. Next item for discussion was the admissions event for prospective UCSC students. The budget for the admissions people at UCSC is apparently almost non-existent, so Steve and the Feingolds offered to host events at their respective abodes (Steve has a nice condo rec room). Finding some young alum volunteers closer in age to prospective students was suggested, since the age and ethnic disparities noticed at last year's mixer seemed to dampen the effectiveness of the event. March 20 or 21 was selected as a target date. Ken shared his ideas for a summer weekend outing to Santa Cruz Island in the Channel Island group. Transportation details include: roundtrip boat ride from Oxnard to the Island runs $47 adults, $40 kids 12 and under. The boat departs at 8 a.m. There is a field station on the island that has dormitories and cabins that can be rented, including a full kitchen, a fire pit outdoors, and room for camping if desired. They can provide truck transportation for baggage from the landing dock to the station, about a 3 1/2 mile hike. People could bring their own food for lunches, and a communal dinner and breakfast could be prepared for all to share. We would be looking at a maximum of about 35 people. The weekend of July 25th was suggested as a good planning target. We are estimating a per person cost of about $100-120 dollars for the weekend. We also discussed inviting a UCSC professor to attend the weekend and talk to us on a pertinent topic, either anthropological or marine biological. This would involve paying their expenses. We also began to talk about a possible fall event, and speakers we could/should invite. Chris has a speakers' list from Dori that he will forward on. This could take place at a Chinese restaurant in Downtown LA, and could also serve as our mandatory Fall association meeting. That brought up the topic of the next slate of chapter officers, which was quickly tabled until later. The next meeting has been scheduled for Saturday, February 28 at 3 PM at the Feingolds. The meeting was adjorned at approximately 3 PM. Respectfully submitted by Claude Zachary, secretary. Comments or corrections are welcomed. From: "Claude B.
